2,265 Megawatts Of Renewable Energy Signed Under NDC Was Wasteful – Peter Amewu

The Minister for Energy, John Peter Amewu has told Parliament that, the 2,265 megawatt renewable energy signed under the previous administration headed by Ex-President John Dramani Mahama was wasteful and unnecessary.

He explained that, the agenda for government has is to make sure that an affordable electricity is supplied to Ghanaians by factoring in the energy mix of the country which includes Hydro, Turbine, and the renewable.

Briefing the house, Mr Amewu said, the NDC government signed some of these renewable contract as high as 31cent per kilowatt power which means that, the ordinary Ghanaian would be paying a higher cost for power.

He said, the NPP government through the Energy Ministry has been able negotiate with the players of the renewable energy to reduce the cost of it to about 10 cent per Kilowatt power.

The energy minister further said, since 2017, the government has taken steps to address the challenges it inherited in the Renewable energy Sector.

He said, Key among these was the signed Renewable Energy PPAs to the tune of 2,265MW at an average price of Cent 19/ Kwh.
