President Akufo-Addo Cuts Sod For Construction Of Kumasi-Obuasi Railway Line

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has cut the sod for work to commence on the 83.5-kilometre standard gauge railway line from Kumasi to Obuasi, as part of the new Western Line being constructed.

Performing the sod cutting ceremony, on Wednesday, 30th September 2020, President Akufo-Addo noted that, by January 2017, out of the 947 kilometres of colonial narrow-gauge rail network bequeathed to the country by the colonialists, barely 10% was operational.

He stated that, apart from the 15 kilometre narrow gauge railway line, built between 2012 and 2017, from Sekondi to Takoradi via Kojokrom, no kilometre of railway line had been added.

“Upon my assumption of office, I was determined to change this statistic, because I believed that the presence of an efficient, effective railway system was critical to the progress, prosperity and development of our nation. This led me to the decision to establish the Ministry of Railways Development, with the dynamic Hon. Joe Ghartey, Member of Parliament for Essikadu Ketan at the helm of affairs. By all accounts, this has started yielding fruits,” the President said.

He continued, “Today’s event, the cutting of the sod for the construction of the 83.5km Kumasi to Obuasi line, is a clear manifestation of the Akufo-Addo Government’s policy to grow and develop the country’s railway sector.”

It will be recalled that, earlier this year, Cabinet and Parliament both approved a €500 million agreement for the construction of a new standard gauge line from Takoradi Harbour to Kojokrom, and also from Manso to Huni Valley.

Once this is completed, one hundred and two kilometres (102km) of new standard-gauge railway lines would have been constructed, as part of the development of a new standard-gauge Western Line.

President Akufo-Addo explained that the Western Line is critical to the successful establishment of the new bauxite and aluminum industry being promoted by Government.

The Sheini and Oppon Manso iron ore deposits, which will form the basis of the imminent iron and steel industry, according to the President, require a modern railway network to transport the ore and the processed raw material.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo told the gathering that work is also progressing steadily on the Tema to Mpakadan Line, which is the first phase of the Tema to Paga section of the Ghana-Burkina Railway Interconnectivity Project.

“This railway line has branch lines to Sheini and Oppon Manso. The exploitation of the bauxite deposits at Atiwa, as part of the nascent bauxite and aluminum industry, will also benefit from the construction of a new railway line,” he added.

With the imminent commencement of construction of the Boankra Inland Port, following the approval by Parliament of a $300 million concession facility, the President stated that, since 1995, the country has been been grappling with the development of the inland port.

The economic viability of the Boankra Inland Project, he stressed, will be greatly enhanced by the presence of a railway line, adding that “a new standard gauge railway line from Accra to Tema to Kumasi is a must, and I expect contracts to be signed for the commencement of the construction of a line from Accra to Tema towards Kumasi before the December elections.”

With the country’s railway network having never gone beyond Kumasi, the President announced that a feasibility study and the preliminary design of a new standard gauge line, from Eduabin to Paga through Bechem, Sunyani, Techiman and Tamale, has been completed.

“Next week, final stakeholder holder consultations will commence, after which the processes for land acquisition will begin. Let me take the opportunity to appeal to the chiefs, who are the custodians of our land, to give their full support to this project. The economic value of all lands, where there is development of the railway line, will be greatly enhanced,” he added.

In the first four years of his administration, President Akufo-Addo noted that more construction activity in the railway sector has gone on than in any period of the country’s history since independence.

“Over the last three years and ten months we have laid a solid foundation, which will receive an even greater impetus when Nana and the NPP get four more years to do more for you. My commitment to the development of a new modern standard railway network is unwavering,” he assured.

Press Statement By The Volta Regional House Of Chiefs Following An Emergency Meeting Held 27TH September, 2020

The Standing Committee of the Volta Region House of Chiefs held an emergency meeting on Sunday the 27th day of September, 2020, to discuss the rebellious actions, allegedly carried out by a secessionist group called “Western Togoland Group”, at various locations in the Volta Region in the early morning of Friday, 25th September, 2020.

The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mr. Kofi Dzamesi and the Minister for National Security, Mr. Albert Kan-Dapaah, were invited to attend this very important meeting, but were not able to attend. While the Minister for National Security indicated that he was already in Kumasi to prepare for the President’s tour of the Ashanti Region, the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs said he had previously scheduled other appointments for the day and so could not attend.

The meeting discussed the activities purportedly carried out by “Western Togoland Group”, including:

1.The mounting of road blocks and the burning of lorry tyres on some roads in various parts of the region, which prevented free flow of vehicular traffic;

2.The attack on the Police Station at Mepe, where the group allegedly broke into the Police cell, freed some suspects, and locked up the Policemen on duty. They were also reported to have broken into the armory and made away with some weaponry;

3.The shooting and injuring of the Divisional Police Commander, who was rushed to the hospital for treatment; and,

4.The seizure of Police pick-up vehicles, amid firing of gun shots.

The Volta Region House of Chiefs roundly condemns these acts by the purported “Western Togoland Group” in no uncertain terms. These were criminal actions, which should be investigated and those involved be made to face the full rigours of the law.

The Volta Region House of Chiefs would like to state clearly their commitment to one peaceful and united Ghana, and their preparedness to collaborate with government to ensure peace and stability in the Volta Region and the country at large.

In this regard, we would like to point out worrying and pertinent issues and questions in connection with these alleged rebel actions, the resolution of which are important for our collective work towards strengthening our peace:

1.How the group managed to mount their bill boards and flags without anyone noticing until these bill boards were seen only in the morning, in all past cases. The Committee wondered how the culprits were able to move huge bill boards to different locations, through the various Police check points without the police noticing.

2.More intriguing, was the ability of the culprits to hoist a flag of the “Western Togoland Group” at the Volta Region Coordinating Council, the office of the Regional Minister, this also going unnoticed by the night security.

3.The reassuring, but also intriguing news item on GhanaWeb on the 26th September, 2020, in which the Volta Regional Minister was reported to have sworn that the recent activity was the last time the secessionist group would conduct themselves in such a manner, and that he had been aware of their activities.

4.The identity of those arrested following the events of Friday, 25th September. It was alleged that innocent bystanders who were observing what was happening were arrested. Some traders from Dzemeni, who arrived at one of the illegal road blocks, were also alleged to have been arrested.

5.The identity of two (2) people who were shot dead at Juapong and another three (3) at Battor. One of those shot dead at Juapong was reported to be a known nearby coconut seller.

6.The failure of the Regional Minister, who is the head of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), to call or brief any of our Chiefs on the issue.

7.The inability of National Security to pick up any intelligence on these activities in order to prevent them or arrest the conspirators, allowing these despicable acts to be committed.

Having said all of the above, however, we deem it our responsibility to the people of the Volta Region and the entire nation, to point out some of the incidents and behaviours which have been a source of worry and frustration to the people of the Region:

1.The statement, a few years ago, by Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, urging the killing of the Voltarians and Gas;

2 The recent statement by K. T. Hammond, recorded on video, that the people of the Volta Region are not Ghanaians, but Togolese;

3.The recent, “mistaken” exclusion of the Region’s roads from the national budget; and,

4.The disrespect shown to the Chiefs during visits by political leaders to the region.

5.The video circulated by one Kevin Taylor, supposedly based in the United States of America, in which he alleged that the government was planning to send vigilantes to foment trouble in the Region, ahead of the elections, with a view to disrupting same.

We cannot pretend not to know that these kinds of statements and conducts can have consequences. The meeting reminds all Ghanaians that we have no choice, but to live together, peaceful, on our God-given land. We must all therefore conduct ourselves in ways that will promote our peace, unity and development.

The people of the Volta Region are known to be peace loving, and we want to assure all Ghanaians that the people of the Region will not lend their support to criminal behavior, such as those committed on Friday, 25th September, 2020.

The Volta Region House of Chiefs therefore calls on the government to cause an independent and transparent investigation into the events of Friday, 25th September, 2020, and bring the perpetrators to book, in order to ensure a peaceful environment for the free and fair conduct of the forthcoming general elections, particularly in the Volta Region.

The Volta Region House of Chiefs finally wishes to appeal to the people of the Region to remain calm and help maintain the peace that the region has enjoyed over the years.

Three New Universities Receive Four New Vehicles Each From Government

Three new universities have received four vehicles each from government to assist their operational effectiveness. They are the SD Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS); CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS); and University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD). The four vehicles comprised a Toyota Land Cruiser, two Toyota Land Cruiser Prados and a Toyota Hilux pickup.

Presenting the vehicles on behalf of the government, Thursday 24th September, 2020 the Minister of Education Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh said the vehicles were provided as part of government’s resourcing plan for the new universities. He further stated that this follows assurances he gave at the inauguration of their Governing Councils and Interim Key Officers, earlier this year, since the universities identified the means of transport among the most of their immediate needs.

In addition to the vehicles, each university received GHS1.5 million to cater for basic logistics needs. This initial funding is sourced from allocations made under GETfund to provide for the most urgent logistics requirements, while government makes provision for adequate funding for their medium to long term needs.

Dr. Prempeh emphasised that government expects the universities to use these resources efficiently and most effectively. “We expect you to be innovative yourselves and resourceful as the universities takeoff so that you can complement government’s efforts.”

He continued, “most of all, we want you to focus on ensuring a smooth takeoff and to keep the universities on a growth path consistent with the mandates given you.”

Speaking on behalf of the three universities, the Vice Chancellor of the CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS), Prof. Eric Wilmot, thanked government for the gesture and assured the Minister of a sound maintenance culture for the vehicles. He further assured him that they will work with the NCTE to ensure that in no time, their institutions will become pace setters.

Free Wifi For Schools Will Start Next Year – Bawumia

A promise by the governing New Patriotic Party  (NPP) to connect all Senior High schools (SHSs) in the country to free internet/Wifi will be fulfilled by next year, the Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has said.

Dr Bawumia made the remarks when he launched the Aspirants Unite for Victory group for the NPP in Accra on Monday, September 29, 2020.

The promise to connect all SHSs to free wifi is contained in the NPP?2020 election manifesto.

At the event, Dr Bawumia charged the unsuccessful parliamentary aspirants of the NPP to actively get on board the 2020 elections campaign to avoid voter apathy in the December elections.

He said they must join forces with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the aspiring MPs so that the roadmap for the party was duly achieved.

“We need a resounding victory for the President and MPs so put in 100 per cent effort so the roadmap is achieved,” the Vice-President told them.

While commending the group for the initiative which he described as remarkable, Dr Bawumia said, “you had the right to grumble but you overlooked your loss for the sake of President Akufo-Addo and the NPP.”

He said the unity exhibited by the group gave enough impetus to the party and so every effort would be made to support the group for a successful campaign.

The Aspirants Unite for Victory is a group of 220 unsuccessful parliamentary aspirants and 42 sitting MPs who lost the primaries of the NPP but who have buried their differences and put the defeat behind them and have joined forces to work to ensure victory for the NPP in the December elections.

Coronavirus Has Jump-Started Our ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ Mission – Dr Bawumia

Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has indicated the coronavirus pandemic afforded an opportunity to establish policies intended to encourage the expansion of domestic industries and reduce imports.

According to him, the domestic production of personal protective equipment (PPEs) has jump-started Ghana Beyond Aid efforts.

Speaking during a video interview with the Oxford Business Group (OBG), the Vice President explained, “In a sense, COVID-19, in some paradoxical way, has jump-started our ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ mission. It has allowed us to be more self-reliant and we have now, by way of policy, through this whole experience said government procurement should be very much directed, when possible, to the local industries. We’re seeing a good response and that is going to drive our policy going forward.”

He added that Ghana’s progress in digitalisation had also proved beneficial when the coronavirus pandemic emerged.

“The pandemic has facilitated the implementation of innovative public health solutions that even included the use of drones, while also providing citizens with access to key government services online and allowing many of them to work from home,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo Inaugurates Tree Crop Development Authority; Headquarters In Kumasi

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated the Tree Crops Development Authority, whose focus will be on the development of tree crops and the consequential benefits to be accrued to the country.

Inaugurating the Authority on Tuesday, 29th September 2020, at the Golden Bean Hotel in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo explained that Government’s strategy is to promote the development of tree crops, other than cocoa, with equal or even higher economic potential.

“The Tree Crops Development Authority, which is the legal and institutional outcome of PERD, will lead the agenda for the diversification of Ghana’s agriculture by developing the tree crops sector,” he said.

The President continued, “To kick start the implementation of PERD, seven tree crops namely mango, cashew, shea, rubber, cocoa, oil palm and coffee have been identified and selected for promotion under the programme, six (6) of which are directly under the supervision of the Authority. I am hopeful that, sooner than later, coffee will also be brought under the direct supervision of the Authority.”

With its headquarters, here, in Kumasi, the Authority will operate like COCOBOD, and put in place policies and programmes to guide research, production, pricing and marketing of the six (6) tree crops.

He told the gathering that if the economic potential of the six (6) selected tree crops are properly harnessed, Ghana could soon increase exponentially her agricultural export earnings.

Thus far, 220,257 farmers have enrolled onto the PERD programme, whilst 235,850 hectares of land have been cultivated, with a total of thirty million seedlings of the various crops produced and to be distributed to farmers and interested persons.

“At full implementation, the PERD programme will link agriculture to industry through the provision of a solid raw material base for industrialisation, develop our rural economies, and assist in the structural transformation of the national economy.  All these will propel growth, create employment, particularly for the youth, and the creation of wealth,” the President added.

The 29-member Board of Directors of the Authority is chaired by Mr. Stephen Sekyere-Abankwa, with a very proactive management team consisting of Chief Executive, William Quaitoo, and his two (2) Deputies, Yaw Osei Oteng, in charge of Finance and Administration, and Foster Boateng, in charge of Operations.

President Akufo-Addo assured the Members of the Authority of the systematic efforts being made by Government to secure funding for the upgrading of the relevant research institutions to assist in the effective development of the sector.

The President was confident that, in the fullness of time, Government’s approach will be wholly vindicated when all these initiatives are vigorously implemented.

“The over-arching vision of a Ghana Beyond Aid is neither rhetoric nor gimmickry. We are determined, through action, to achieve this vision, and today’s programme is a clear indication of our total commitment. With God on our side, we shall surely succeed,” he added.

The Independent Candidate In Suame Is An Agent Of NDC-Kyei Mensah

The independent Parliamentary Aspirant in the Suame Constituency is being sponsored by the opposition National Democratic Congress, Hon Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has said.

Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu , the Member of Parliament  for Suame Constituency, made the statement during a one-on-one interview on Ashh Fm’s Key Note last Friday 25th September,20 hosted by Kwadwo Amakwah Foxzy.

He said the NDC have adopted the strategy of sponsoring independent candidates in the Ashanti Region including Suame constituency.

The Majority Leader in Parliament observed that the opposing political party was strategically pushing the independent candidate at his constituency just to pollute the electorate about his leadership and the good works of this government.

He said the independent candidate that the NDC is sponsoring in his constituency is claiming to be a member of the NPP, in order to sway votes from the NPP’s official parliamentary candidates.

Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu stated emphatically that “it is not true that the independent candidate is a member of the NPP in the Suame Constituency or elsewhere”.

The affable Minister of Parliamentary Affairs therefore urged the electorates to vote against all those imposters so that their ambition of reducing NPP parliamentary candidates’ votes would fail.

“Where was this so-called independent candidate who is claiming to be NPP member when the NPP were having the primaries?” he asked.

Hon. Kyei Mensah disclosed that, during the NDC’s administration they gave the said Independent Candidate (George Prempeh) a contract at the Tema Habour to work on second hand fridges.

‘’Even the person who attempted to contest me later rescinded his decision after the delegates of the party overwhelmingly endorsed my candidature’ he added

Osei Kyei Mansah Bonsu who has been enstooled as Suame Sompahene entreated the electorates to vote massively for Nana Akufo-Addo and all NPP parliamentary candidates to form the next government.

While counting down his achievements over the past twenty years (20) the Suame MP said his chances of emerging victorious in the upcoming December 7 general elections is a done deal because he has been a good servant. “That’s the basis on which I’m going to ask four more for myself and the President Nana Akufo-Addo.

According to him, his works since assuming office as MP is a tremendous indication that he deserves one more term in office.

‘ Under my able leadership I have been able to lobby for educational infrastructures across , giving scholarship to brilliant but needy students, lobbying for the construction of health facilities , drainages ,roads ,sanitation, security and electricity’ so we are on course, the creation of the municipal has also helped in the speeding of development in the constituency’. He outlined.
