EC Set Records Straight As It Clarifies Election Figures

The Electoral Commission has clarified the disparities in the presidential election results percentages declared on Wednesday, December 9, 2020.

In a statement the EC acknowledged that the Chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa “inadvertently used 13,433,573 as the total valid votes cast.”

“The total valid votes cast is 13,119,460. This does not change the percentages stated for each candidate and the declaration made by the Chairperson,” the EC said in the statement issued Thursday morning, December 10, 2020.

The EC has since provided a summary of the 2020 presidential election results without the Techiman South consituency.

In a similar development, The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has won 137 Parliamentary seats as against 136 by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) out of the total 274 seats declared as of now.

The EC in a press release said the results for the Sene West Parliamentary in the Bono East Region was outstanding while the Fomena seat was won by independent candidate Mr Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

Already, the NDC has said it was rejecting the results of the elections.

At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, the vanquished presidential candidate, John Mahama described the declaration by the EC as flawed and one that would not be accepted by the NDC .

Meanwhile, The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has described the elections conducted on DEC 7, as Free, Fair and transparent, in an interim report on the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

CHRAJ stated in its interim report on the elections, issued by its Commissioner, Joseph Whittal on Thursday, that from reports the Commission received from over 198 constituencies, 211 districts and 303 polling centres across the country, the Commission is of the view that on the whole, the elections were free, fair and transparent and that infractions on citizens’ the right to vote, especially vulnerable persons, were minimal.
