An enormous pressure mounts on former President John Dramani Mahama to render an unqualified apology to the Chief Imam, the Muslim community and the entire Ghanaian population for choosing to lie on a day that means so much to the people who practise Islam as a religion.
The former President appears not to have learnt any lesson from the humiliating defeat he suffered in the 2016 elections as he continues to churn out the lies which informed many people to vote against him even in opposition.
As though that were not enough, Mr. Mahama would not peddle this falsehood on any other platform than at the Al Sunna Eid Prayers on the occasion of Eid ul Adha at the Efua Sutherland Park on 11th August, 2019.
The former President, in his speech, said that his administration did something extraordinarily significant when they got scholarships to train Ghanaian doctors in Cuba. He particularized his message on the fact that some girls from the Muslim communities were transported to the South American country to be trained in gynaecology.
“About six years ago, when we got scholarships to send some of our children to Cuba to train as Doctors, there was something significant we did. We deliberately decided to source girls from the Muslim communities to be part of the training, especially in the area of gynaecology.”
The above claim by the former President has been refuted as false and an invention by Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service.
“No student was trained in gynaecology from the batch sent to Cuba then as claimed by former President John Mahama. In all, there were 217 general practitioners and 2 physiotherapists in that batch” Dr. Nsiah-Asare clarified.
Dr. Nsiah-Asare also used the opportunity to school the former President on who can be trained as a gynaecologist as he said that before one can be trained in the field, he or she needs to be trained as a general practitioner, and that no one was subsequently trained in gynaecology.
The former President, for reasons quite obvious, sought to pull the wool over the eyes of the people within the zongo communities by ‘showcasing’ his unflinching love for them and their welfare.
This falsehood, one can also infer, was told to garner support from the people who practise Islam as he seeks a comeback in the next elections.
What many find to be puzzling is why the former President would choose such a great day in the Islamic calendar to commit such a sacrilegious sin.
He is being impressed upon to apologise unreservedly for seeking to deceive the people with such an untruth.
