BOOSTING TOURISM IN GHANA: GHANA TO ISSUE VISAS ON ARRIVAL IN DECEMBER TO BOOST LOCAL FESTIVITIES

As Ghana entrenches its Christmas destination attraction and in a bid to attract more international visitors during the December In GH festivities, the Ghanaian government has announced the introduction of a visa-on-arrival policy for travelers.
The new arrangement, which takes effect from December 1 to January 15, aims to facilitate increased tourist arrivals and participation in Ghana’s flagship season of cultural events and festivals.
According to the government, it seeks to strengthen Ghana’s positioning as a top destination as part of the Beyond the Return initiative.
In an official statement dated Wednesday, November 22, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) said, “The visa-on-arrival program aims to encourage more travelers to experience the unique cultural heritage, vibrant events and festivals during the holiday season.”
The GTA welcomed the waiver, stating that “it encourages travelers to take advantage of this remarkable opportunity and be a part of the December in GH program.”
It noted that the campaign has set the spotlight on Ghana as the official destination for the season, attracting many from diverse backgrounds since 2019.
Meanwhile, in a letter to airlines dated Tuesday, November 22, Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah directed them to update systems to reflect the new arrangement and allow visa-on-arrival boarding without prior approval documents.
The visa rules are expected to deepen the bonds between Ghana and its global community through increased diaspora visits and exchanges during the festive period.
They also provide prospects for cultural interactions and economic gains, according to the government.
Speaking to the founder of Afroyage, an online platform that promotes Ghana’s tourist potential, Ms. Chantel Kristin Lahmer, a Ghanaian-German and a self-motivated ambassador for Ghana’s tourism heritage, shared her optimism and concerns about the visa-on-arrival directive.
Noting that the policy was positive, she raised the specter of long queues forming at various immigration desks, which could be frustrating to airline passengers and travelers to Ghana.
She noted that the policy will significantly boost tourism footfalls in the country, contributing to the country’s economic growth as a result.
