According to police, a shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) campus on Wednesday morning resulted in the deaths of three people. During a gunfight, the suspect—who has not been named—was hit by officers and died. Police sent a statement stating that one more victim is still in serious condition at a nearby hospital. The gunman was identified by law enforcement officials as a Caucasian former college professor in his sixties. Police spoke with the US network CBS. They also mentioned that he has taught in North Carolina and Georgia in the past. For the remainder of Wednesday, UNLV and every other Southern Nevada System of Higher Education school in the state will be closed.
At around 11:53 local time (19:53 GMT), the university tweeted for the first time that police were responding to reports of gunfire on campus. The university said that campus police were responding to another incident of gunfire near the Student Union building about twenty minutes later. It advised Beam Hall students to “evacuate to a safe area” and to follow the widely accepted “RUN-HIDE-FIGHT” active shooter technique. According to University Police Chief Adam Garcia, the attacker exchanged gunfire with two campus cops prior to being hit and killed. Earlier, during a news conference, Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated that they currently “had no idea of the motive.”

The gunman was in the Beam Hall, Frank and Estella Building, which houses UNLV’s Lee Business School, the university reported on X, previously Twitter. They said that there was another report of gunfire at the adjoining student union, to which police had been called.
At a news conference on Wednesday evening, the sheriff stated that one more victim is at a nearby hospital and is in stable condition. In addition, two police officers had minor injuries treated, and four other individuals were admitted to the hospital due to panic attacks.
A local ABC station was informed by a student that they felt as though the cops had been on campus immediately.
He told the reporter, describing the situation as follows: “You’re not sure what to do. You’re messaging your friends and family and telling them how much you love them because you know that the shooter might suddenly barge in at any moment.”
