President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau has fired Prime Minister Geraldo Martins, only a week after re-appointing him.

Mr. Martins was named Prime Minister in August but resigned earlier this month after President Embaló dissolved the government following a failed coup attempt on December 1.

Last week, the president reappointed Mr. Martins as Prime Minister.

Rui Duarte de Barros, who previously served as the West African country’s transitional prime minister from 2012 to 2014, was named to succeed Mr. Martins in a presidential order released on Wednesday.

While President Embaló was in Dubai for the UN’s COP28 climate meeting, there were confrontations between two army groups in Bissau.

Mr. Embaló pledged “serious consequences” for anyone responsible for the upheaval, which he described as a thwarted coup—the second against his leadership in less than two years.
