A gas explosion in the country’s capital, Nairobi, on Thursday night killed two people and wounded 222 others.

The wildfire began when a vehicle carrying gas exploded in Nairobi’s Embakasi area at 11:30 p.m. local time, “igniting a huge ball of fire that spread widely,” according to government spokesperson Isaac Maigua Mwaura on social media.

A video released on social media shows an explosion that produces a massive fireball.

Mwaura said the bomb and accompanying conflagration caused damage to residential structures, shops, and automobiles.

According to Mwaura, two people died while undergoing treatment at Nairobi West Hospital. “The government sends its most sincere condolences to the families of the departed souls.”

The Kenya Red Cross reported that it had evacuated 271 people to hospitals in Nairobi and was “tirelessly battling the flames” with other organizations.

A command center has been established at the spot to coordinate rescue operations and other intervention measures, according to spokeswoman Mwaura, who also stated that the area has been guarded.

“Kenyans are hereby advised to keep off the cordoned area in order to allow the rescue mission to be carried out with minimal disruptions,” the prime minister stated.
