The Presidential Candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has sounded a marked shift from the current economic management of the country when given the nod to become president after the general elections slated for December 7, 2024
Highlighting his vision for Ghana at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Wednesday (7 February), Bawumia said he is the best candidate for the presidency of this country in the 2024 presidential election.
Bawumia was speaking at his first major public lecture of his presidential campaign, on the theme of “Ghana’s Next Chapter: Selfless Leadership and Bold Solutions for the Future.”
The Vice President made a series of bold decisions when elected President, which included the abolishment of the tax on electronic financial transactions, popularly known as the e-levy, the recently proposed emissions tax, the betting tax and the proposed VAT on electricity. He also stated that under his administration, ministers of state would not exceed 50 in number and the National Service Scheme would no longer be mandatory.
Dr. Bawumia stated that his vision for a digital and cashless economy for the nation would receive a significant boost with the abolition of the e-levy.

The NPP flagbearer announced the introduction of a simplified, citizen- and business-friendly flat tax regime for Ghana, aimed at supporting individuals and businesses, particularly small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).

Dr. Bawumia said his government would furthermore implement far-reaching policies with not more than 50 ministers and deputy ministers should he be elected as the President of Ghana.
On job creation, the NPP presidential candidate proposed a significant shift in Ghana’s national service scheme, stressing the need to prioritize job creation for Ghanaian youth.
Under his proposed policy, which he intends to implement if elected president, graduates who secure employment upon completing their education would be exempt from national service. This exemption would make them immediately available to contribute to the workforce.

In attendance were Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the First Lady, wife of Vice President Hajia Samira Bawumia; former President John Agyekum Kufuor; former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye; and Mrs. Osei Frema-Opare, the Chief of Staff.
The others are the National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Stephen Ayensu Ntim, Mr. Justin Kodua Frempong, the General Secretary, former presidential aspirants of the party, ministers of state, members of Parliament, party executives, the Council of Elders, the diplomatic community and party supporters.
