The opening ceremony of the IHF Africa Zone 3 Male U-18 and U-20 Handball Championship kicked off today at the Dome of the newly-built Borteyman Sports Complex.
The ceremony began with a wonderful display of cultural dance and acrobatics from a well-synchronized troupe displaying various dance styles to the teeming crowd. Mr Eric Mensah Bonsu, Head of Finance and Administration, Ministry of Youth and Sports, representing the Minister officially declared the games as a brief address.
Majeed Bawa, Deputy Director General of the NSA also tasked Ghana, hosts of the championship for a 3rd time to defy all odds and win the ultimate in both categories.
Also present was the President Ghana Handball Association, Nii Lante Bannerman and a host of other dignitaries.
The games followed with the Ghana Male U-18 team locking horns with the Togolese U-18:The hosts thumping the latter by 57-13.
The second game of the day saw a nerve-racking duel between the Ghana U-20 Male side and their Ivorian counterparts ending in 44 all draw.
A result clearly a true reflection of two equally matched opponents.
This year’s championship features 8 teams including hosts; Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Niger and Benin spanning a period of four days from 20-24 February 2024.
