Diaper Importers Association of Ghana has refuted claims its members import poor quality and unhygienically packaged baby diapers into the country.
They have described the move by the Food and Drugs Authority as a deliberate attempt to destroy their businesses, stressing that they import bale diapers which are under strict monitoring and meet FDA’s guidelines.
FDA on Monday, April 8, issued a statement cautioning manufacturers, importers and distributors of baby diapers against importing unregistered and unsanitary baby diapers, also known as bale diapers, into the country.
The authority further urged the general public to buy only registered baby diapers to help protect babies from the risk of infections.
President of Ghana Importers Association, Nana Obiri Asamoah ii, addressing the media in Accra expressed disappointment in FDA maintaining that it is a calculated attempt to destroy their businesses.
National Financial Secretary of GUTA who double as the Greater Accra chairman, Nana Kwabena Preprah, appealed for an equal and enabling environment for traders.
The general secretary of the Diaper Importers Association of Ghana Mr Albert Obeng in his address condemns the discomfort officials of the Food and Drugs Authority is leaching to their members. He promised to do everything in his power to push their businesses and instead of collapsing. “We have seen economy grow but have never seen economy grew with foreigners” So we are seeking to appeal to the government to do the best it can in supporting indigenous businesses because that is the only way and the surest way ensuring that we have economic independence.
Some of the importers who were very angry with recent frustration from the FDA said they will not sit down for their money to go to waste or will either go on the street to demonstrate until they are free.
