In a keenly contested primary, Mr. Joseph Addo emerged victorious as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for La Dadekotopon in the Greater Accra region, securing 664 votes against his closest contender, Solomon Kotey Niikio, who garnered 555 votes out of the 1221 total votes cast.
The primary was sanctioned by the National Executive Committee of the NPP following the resignation of the previously elected parliamentary candidate, Dr. Gerald Joseph Tetteh, citing personal reasons.
Mr. Addo’s candidacy took centre stage after his long-standing service as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s chauffeur for over two decades. His decision to contest in the primary was made public following Dr. Tetteh’s resignation.
Notably, Mr. Addo recently made a significant contribution to the party by donating to an office complex located on Ako Adjei Road. This donation was a timely boost, as the party had been operating from rented premises due to the absence of a permanent office.
In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to the party members for having confidence in him to elect him as the new parliamentary candidate to lead them towards the 2024 elections.
He pledged to unite the party and urged all the supporters of his opponent to come on board to work hard and get more votes to make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the next President of Ghana.
The ruling NPP lost the La Dedekotopon seat in the 2020 election to the incumbent NDC MP, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah.
Mr. Addo’s election as the NPP parliamentary candidate sets the stage for a spirited campaign as both parties vie for victory in the upcoming elections.
In a related development, Mr. Tapha Tassah secured 316 votes as against 296 votes garnered by Rabiu Awal, Akan Constituency NPP Chairman to win the NPP parliamentary primary in the Akan Constituency in the Oti Region.
The total valid votes cast was 612 with no rejected ballot.
The by-election follows the demise of PC, Rashid Bawa, who died on March 14, this year in Nigeria.
In an acceptance speech, lawyer Tassah thanked delegates and said that voting for him was a call to duty.
The 48-year Lawyer, said, “Together with the Constituency Chairman, they will work tirelessly to win the Akan seat for the first time for NPP.
He assured the party faithful that campaign logistics would not be a problem as he was well prepared to do that.
Chairman Awal, the losing candidate assured lawyer Tassah of his full support during the December 7 polls to win the seat for the party.
Mr. Jonathan Akpabey Menu, the Oti Regional Secretary, asked the party members to campaign vigorously for the NPP PC for the party to “Break the Eight.”
