PARLIAMENT HOUSE: MAJORITY CAUCUS TO BOYCOTT PARLIAMENT UNTIL SUPREME COURT RULES ON THE FOUR AFFECTED MPS

The Majority caucus has strongly condemned Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare the seats of four Members of Parliament vacant, following a motion filed by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu.
The motion referenced constitutional provisions that mandate MPs seeking to run as independent candidates or change party affiliations to vacate their seats.
The Majority caucus also raised concerns about Bagbin’s disregard for ongoing judicial proceedings.
They noted that on October 15, 2024, the Majority Leader filed a suit against the Speaker and the Attorney General seeking constitutional interpretation of Article 94(1)(g).
The Speaker, they claim, was formally notified of the suit on October 16, 2024, during a parliamentary session.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament after the Speakers ruling, the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin said, the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin conspired with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmakers to declare the four seats vacant.
According to Majority Leader, Ghanaians have just witnessed a conspiracy between the speaker and the Minorty to bring confusion in the house, and it is clear that Mr. Speaker avoided service of the writ to do the bidding of the NDC.
He stated that, the Majority Caucus is immediately boycotting parliament until the matter is determined by the Supreme Court since the speaker has no right to interpret the constitution.

Majority maintain that the determination of whether the MPs should lose their seats should have been left to the courts, not preemptively decided by the Speaker.
This development has escalated political tensions within Parliament, with the Majority caucus signaling its intent to challenge the Speaker’s ruling in court. They are also weighing the broader consequences for parliamentary governance.
Meanwhile, the MPs affected by the ruling are the NDC’s Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of Amenfi Central constituency, Andrew Amoakoh Asiamah of Fomena, Kojo Asante, NPP MP for Suhum in the Eastern Region, and NPP’s Cynthia Morrison of Agona West constituency.
