AHEAD OF 2024 GENERAL ELECTIONS: NMC LAUNCHES MOBILE APP TO PROTECT JOURNALISTS AND TACKLE MISINFORMATION

The National Media Commission (NMC) has introduced a cutting-edge, internet-based tool called the Ghana Media Watch App. Set to be available for download on the Play Store and iOS starting Monday, November 16, 2024, this application aims to promote transparency and authenticity in news and media content while also providing protection for journalists, especially during the upcoming 2024 elections.
Speaking to the media at the launch of the app in Accra on Thursday, the Executive Secretary of the NMC, George Sarpong, emphasized that Ghanaian society is increasingly vulnerable to information distortion, a risk that has intensified in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He noted that beyond misinformation and disinformation, Ghanaians are facing a new threat known as FIMI—Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference.
He encouraged media stakeholders to work together to shield the public from harmful information distortion, which poses a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
Mr. Sarpong noted that, when used effectively, the app could play a crucial role during the 2024 general elections. He urged Ghanaians, particularly journalists, to download the app once it becomes officially available.

To ensure the app’s effectiveness and foster collaboration, Sarpong invited key stakeholders—including CDD-Ghana, the Media Foundation for West Africa, the Fact-Checkers Society of Ghana, and other media organizations like the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA)—to contribute by sharing information.
The Ghana Media Watch app empowers both journalists and citizens to capture and submit relevant audio and video content, which is automatically time-stamped and geo-tagged to verify authenticity. All submissions will undergo review to assess their importance and, if necessary, prompt immediate action from other agencies, including security services.
