“We Are a Mighty Minority; Our Numbers in Parliament Will Not Deter Us” – Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

During the show, Hon. Oppong Nkrumah reaffirmed the strength and resilience of the Minority in Parliament, emphasizing that their numbers would not hinder their role in governance. “We are a mighty minority; our numbers in Parliament will not deter us,” he stated, reinforcing their determination to remain influential despite their numerical disadvantage.

He further clarified the Minority’s role, saying, “We did not go to Parliament to be obstructive but to provide alternative propositions.” His remarks highlight the opposition’s commitment to constructive engagement rather than unnecessary resistance.

Hon. Oppong Nkrumah also addressed concerns regarding Speaker Alban Bagbin’s handling of a contempt case in Parliament. He stressed that “it is the House, not the Speaker, that determines the punishment for a member found guilty of contempt of Parliament.”

According to him, before establishing a disciplinary committee, the Speaker is required to consult with the leadership of the House. However, “Alban Bagbin failed to consult anyone and even imposed his own punishment, which does not align with parliamentary regulations,” he said.

Citing parliamentary rules, he outlined the prescribed disciplinary measures:

First offense: Suspension for four days
Second offense: Suspension for eight days
Third offense: Suspension for twelve days
His remarks have sparked discussions on the Speaker’s adherence to due process, raising concerns over procedural integrity and fairness in parliamentary decisions.

As Ghana’s political landscape evolves, the Minority remains determined to hold the Majority accountable while ensuring that parliamentary regulations are upheld.
