Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, has firmly ruled out the possibility of a rerun of the parliamentary election in the constituency.
She asserted that all necessary documentation is intact, dismissing calls for a rerun due to disputes over the collation of results.
A High Court order on January 4, 2025, directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to finalise the collation process and declare winners for four outstanding parliamentary elections. While three constituencies have had their results declared, Ablekuma North remains unresolved.
Collation resumed on January 8, 2025, but was suspended due to incomplete results from three polling stations. The EC scheduled the process to continue on January 17, 2025, at 8:00 AM. However, based on security intelligence, the Ghana Police Service advised postponement. Despite this, the EC, in a statement on January 17, indicated that the police had not provided enhanced security at the collation centre, leading to an invasion by party supporters and a subsequent suspension of the process.
In a related development, the NPP Minority Caucus in Parliament has announced its intentions to embark on a series of street protests if the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, Madam Akua Afriyie, is not declared winner of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.
The Minority Caucus has therefore issued a one-week ultimatum to Ghana’s electoral management body, the Electoral Commission (EC), to declare Madam Akua Afriyie as winner of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency.
Speaking to some journalists during a visit by the leadership of the Minority Caucus to Ablekuma North, Minority Chief Whip Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh hinted that the caucus would embark on a series of protests to press home their demand if the relevant stakeholders fail to address their concerns.
The Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, taking her turn, said the NPP candidate will be a huge asset in parliament and are eager to welcome her to augment their efforts in the house.
