The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, appeared before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Monday for questioning.

His appearance follows a botched arrest operation on Friday, May 23, when a combined team of National Security operatives and police officers reportedly attempted to detain him at his residence. The attempted arrest, which was captured in viral videos, showed heavily armed and masked personnel surrounding the premises—an incident that has since drawn widespread public attention and political commentary.

Chairman Wontumi arrived at the CID in the company of high-profile legal representatives, including former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame and former Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi.

While the Ghana Police Service has yet to release an official statement on the matter, sources close to the investigation suggest the questioning may be connected to recent political developments within the ruling party and allegations surrounding Wontumi’s conduct.

Wontumi’s legal team is expected to address the media following the engagement with investigators.

The incident has stirred debate, particularly among Wontumi’s supporters, who view the failed arrest as a politically motivated move aimed at silencing one of the NPP’s most vocal regional leaders.
