Airport Disinfection: Domestic Flights Set To Resume In Ghana Imminently- Aviation Minister

Ghana has announced plans to reopen its airports to domestic flights after closing it over three weeks ago due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), according to the Aviation Minister, Joseph Adda, will resume flight operations at the weekend to ease the restriction of movement of people in the country.

The Minister made the announcement on Tuesday during a disinfection exercise at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, conducted by the Zoomlion Group.

As part of the ongoing disinfection exercises across the country, the Ministry of Local Government in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Limited extended the effort to the Kotoka International Airport in Accra as part of measures to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Mr Adda said that the exercise was also in line with the protocols established by the President’s Special Taskforce to deal with the virus.

The GACL was closed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), except for special flights that were evacuating passengers from different countries under the permission of the President.

He said the shipment of cargoes at the airport were ongoing because there is the need to bring in essential medical equipment to support the fight of the pandemic.

He added that hand washing machines, sanitizers, and border nose and face mask would be made available and checked by the company before operation resumes again.

Mr Adda added that it is possible that permission will be granted to foreign embassies who want to evacuate personnel as “we have been doing and when they get the permission and bring the personnel, the Airport Company will do the right thing to ensure that they move them out of the country”.

Reverend Ebenezer Kwame Adei, Head of Disinfection Team, Zoomlion Group, said the exercise has been extended to all the airports in the country.

He assured the public of their commitment to do a professional work by disinfecting all the “nooks and crannies” around the company.
