AFCON 23 POST-MATCH VIEWS: HUGHTON, FANS EXPRESS DISAPPOINTMENT OVER GHANA’S LOSS TO CAPE VERDE

The head coach of the men’s senior national team, the Black Stars, Chris Hughton, has expressed his disappointment over Ghana’s 2-1 loss to the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde in the Black Stars’ first group match at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON 23) at the Félix-Houphouet-Boigny Sports Stadium in the Ivorian capital, Abidjan, on Sunday.
Many Ghanaians were left hugely disappointed at the final whistle after Cape Verde’s Garry Rodriguez’s late winner in injury time began a rocky start to the competition for the Black Stars.
The loss leaves the Stars rooted to the bottom of Group B, while Cape Verde moves to the top of the group with three maximum points ahead of Egypt and Mozambique, who played out a 2-2 draw and have a point each. The upset also means that the Black Stars have only won one of their last eight AFCON games.
Chris Hughton, in his post-match comments to the media, emphasized that the manner in which the goal was conceded in the dying minutes of the game was highly disappointing, after pointing out that the four-time African Champions put up a spirited performance to have won the game.

Giving a review of the game, the Head of Sports at Oman 107.1 FM, Yaw Asante Yeboah, said the team woefully failed to live up to the confidence, trust and expectations of some Ghanaians but remained optimistic of the team’s chances in the remaining games.

NET2 TV News spoke to some Ghanaian fans in Abidjan after the match, with many expressing their disappointment at the Black Stars.
