Aggrieved Victims Reject Food Donations from Interior Minister During Visit to Adum

Some victims of the devastating fire at the Adum PZ Market in Kumasi on Wednesday (27 March) rejected food donations from the Interior Minister and Asawase MP, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, demanding instead that the government prioritize rebuilding the market.

The fire, which occurred on 21 March, razed numerous shops, destroying livelihoods and leaving traders desperate for practical assistance.

Muntaka, accompanied by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene and NADMO’s Director-General, visited the site to assess the damage and engage with affected traders.

As part of the visit, the team donated relief items, including 1,500 bags of rice, 800 boxes of cooking oil, and 1,000 boxes of soap. However, the traders turned down the aid, expressing frustration that food supplies would not help them recover their businesses.

In a video circulating online, some victims were seen jeering at the delegation, insisting that the government should focus on rebuilding the market rather than providing short-term relief. They also voiced concerns over potential eviction from the land, urging authorities to ensure their businesses can be restored.

Despite the rejection, Muntaka emphasized that the government remains committed to supporting the traders during this difficult period, highlighting the importance of responsive leadership in times of crisis.
“During our inspection of the site, it became evident that immediate action was necessary to alleviate some of the hardships faced by those affected…These contributions are vital in restoring a sense of normalcy and hope among those who have lost their livelihoods due to this disaster”, the Minister stated in a Facebook post.

The items were later received by one Chairman Tieku Addai on behalf of the various groups. He expressed gratitude to the minister for the generous donation. He acknowledged that while their primary concern remains reclaiming their land, the donated items would provide much-needed support to the affected victims.
