The Association of Concerned Farmers has assured the general public that there is enough food in the country.
This comes after the association embarked on an initiative dubbed “identification of community challenges” where they toured farming communities to engage farmers following complaints from the public about the increasing prices of food in the country.
Speaking at a press conference, the President of the Association, Nana Oboadea Boateng Bonsu II, assured the general public that there is enough food for the country and that nobody should panic. He added that food prices would soon get cheaper.
He also assured poultry farmers that there are enough grains such as maize and soya beans which are key ingredients in poultry feed.
According to Nana Bonsu II, farmers have enjoyed a bumper harvest; this particular year and more production are yet to come. He further said there are even more plantains that are in the stage of getting rotten because when it gets to the market, people are not buying them in time.
He, however, blamed the current price hikes of food in the country on middlemen and market women who wanted to make abnormal profits.
Nana Bonsu II explained that, even though the price of fuel is high, some of the prices of the produces being sold in the market are shocking.
He continued that there were some individuals who deliberately purchased food from farmers with the ill intention of reselling it to market women for more money.
According to Nana Bonsu II, the only challenge the association is facing now is transportation and there are some places where the road network is very bad, making the conveying of foodstuffs from such places very hard
To remedy the situation, he called on the government as a matter of urgency to implement its truck system to eliminate middlemen in foodstuff trading.
He added that the system would be responsible for delivering food from the farm gates and farming communities directly to people in the cities and urban centers.
