Black Queens forward Stella Nyamekye has voiced confidence in the team’s preparedness ahead of their third-place playoff against South Africa at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The bronze medal match is set for Friday, July 25, at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, where Ghana will be aiming to end the tournament on a high note after narrowly missing out on a spot in the final.
The Black Queens were narrowly eliminated by host nation Morocco in the semifinals, losing 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw that extended into extra time. Defending champions South Africa also fell short in the last four, suffering a 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals Nigeria.
Ahead of the much-anticipated rematch, Stella Nyamekye highlighted the team’s mental focus and thorough preparations for the third-place clash.
“We’ve trained hard for this match,” she stated. “Our preparations have been solid, and mentally, we’re ready for the challenge.”
Friday’s showdown will be the second meeting between Ghana and South Africa at the tournament. In the group stage, Banyana Banyana secured a 2-0 win — a result the Black Queens will be eager to reverse as they fight for a spot on the podium.
