Wontumi Hospitalised After Arrest and Interrogation – Legal Team Confirms
Legal counsel for embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has confirmed that his client has been hospitalised following his arrest and interrogation by state security operatives.
Speaking to the media after hours of legal and police procedures, lawyer and NPP Member of Parliament, Andy Appiah-Kubi, disclosed that Wontumi fell ill during questioning and was transferred to a medical facility for treatment.
“My client has been taken to the hospital for medical attention,” Appiah-Kubi stated. “The interrogation process is not yet complete. We hope to resume tomorrow if his condition improves. Otherwise, he will remain under medical care until discharged.”
Wontumi’s arrest has stirred controversy within the NPP, with party leaders calling the incident an act of political intimidation. According to party sources, Wontumi initially honoured a police invitation and was cooperating at the CID headquarters when heavily armed, masked officers unexpectedly whisked him away for further detention and questioning.
While the exact nature of the allegations remains unclear, Appiah-Kubi confirmed that some charges had been presented, to which his client responded before his condition worsened.
Adding another layer to the unfolding situation, Appiah-Kubi revealed that Wontumi was also served with a writ of summons from Exim Bank earlier in the day, indicating a parallel civil legal challenge.
“We received a writ from Exim Bank this afternoon and intend to respond to the claims tomorrow,” he said. “We are confident about mounting a strong defence.”
The lawyer was careful to distinguish between the criminal investigation and the civil suit. “The Exim Bank matter is a civil issue, and we will handle it accordingly in court,” he noted.
Wontumi’s hospitalisation has intensified tensions around a case that has already triggered sharp reactions within the NPP. National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and other party figures have condemned the arrest, calling it politically motivated and reminiscent of “dark days” of suppression.
Despite the charged atmosphere, Appiah-Kubi reaffirmed the party’s commitment to legal processes. “We are cooperating fully. We believe in the rule of law,” he said.
The NPP has assured the public that it will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
