Former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security and a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Palgrave Boakye Danquah, has strongly condemned the violent incidents that marred today’s parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Dr. Danquah expressed deep concern over the chaos and lawlessness that characterized the election process, including reported attacks on former Member of Parliament Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, the NPP’s candidate Hon. Nana Akua Afriyie, and a party agent at the St. Peter’s polling station.
He also highlighted the unprovoked assault of a GHOne TV journalist by a police officer, describing the incident as a threat to Ghana’s democratic values and international image as a beacon of peaceful elections.
“The presence of unidentified individuals posing as security personnel, arrested near the Awoshie DVLA polling station, further heightens concerns about voter intimidation and electoral integrity,” he stated.
Dr. Danquah called on the leadership of the NPP to remain vigilant yet restrained, emphasizing the need for supporters to uphold peace while robustly defending their democratic rights.
He urged the Ghana Police Service to swiftly investigate all reported incidents, ensure accountability within the security forces, and implement stronger security measures to protect voters, candidates, and the integrity of the electoral process.
The former government spokesperson also reiterated his support for Hon. Nana Akua Afriyie, encouraging the party to rally behind her candidacy and approach the rerun with unity, transparency, and discipline.
“Let Ablekuma North be a testament to our commitment to democracy as we prepare for victory in 2028,” Dr. Danquah declared.
His call comes at a critical time as the NPP grapples with internal divisions and rising public scrutiny ahead of the 2028 general elections. The Ablekuma North rerun is seen as a litmus test of the party’s organizational strength and public trust.
