Outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been eulogised by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the 66th summit held in Abuja, Nigeria, for upholding high the tenets of democracy during his 8-year governance in Ghana.
The president on Ghana’s behalf received a standing ovation for his commitment to championing democracy in the sub-region, particularly during his smooth transition of power to President-elect John Mahama.
Bestowing the title ‘Mr. Democrat’ on Ghana’s leader, President Bola Tinubu, who chaired the summit, said the honour was in recognition of his remarkable contributions to democracy, which is a testament to his dedication to democratic values.
The Nigerian president also commended President Akufo-Addo’s impeccable attendance record at all ECOWAS sessions throughout his eight-year tenure.
This is the last time President Akufo-Addo will attend the ECOWAS summit in the capacity of Ghana’s president.
He twice served as its chairman.
