Educationist Calls For Addition Of UCMAS Into National Curriculum

An Educationist and Columnist, Anis Haffar has called for the inclusion of the Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS), a math learning program into the national curriculum in order to improve mathematics education at the basic levels of education.


Mr. Haffar made the call to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and national curriculum council at this year’s UCMAS national competition held at the Pentecost Convention Centre in the central region.


Mr. Haffar who expressed his satisfaction over the speed and accuracy of the young children with the ability to calculate and produce accurate results at the same time was optimistic its inclusion will benefit children of the new generation.

UCMAS refers to a programme that uses Abacus as the tool, Arithmetic as the evaluation process and kinesthetic learning as the methodology mostly among ages 5 to 13 years.

He urged management not to give up on spreading the fine education nationwide and also appealed to parents to give the necessary support to ensure their children get the best out of education.


In an interview with the media, the Director of Maurya Education Limited, Girish Gurbani, said their aim was to eradicate the fear of Mathematics from all Ghanaian children as well as boost their confidence, enhance their listening skills, and improve their creativity.


He lauded parents for investing in their wards and the transformation in their wards is a testament to greatness.

Mr. Gurbani thanked the over 2,000 participants for comporting themselves in their two-day stay at the Pentecost Convention Centre and also congratulated winners of various categories and wished better luck to those who couldn’t win any trophy in the next competition.


For her part, the administrator with Lad Integrated School in Akim Swedru, Kandis Attafuah Domena, noted that the introduction of UCMAS has really transformed her students with the way they think and their social lifestyle. “No wonder they picked most of the awards.”


She appealed to GES to accept UCMAS and make it part of their syllabus so Ghanaian students nationwide benefit from the transformative methodology.

Madam Eyram Gobah, a parent whose son won the overall champion for the sky blue category recounts how her son has become creative on the spot of his thinking. She also added that what gives her more joy is that her lovely boy’s calculation is better and faster.

Some of the students who competed and won various awards thanked their parents for believing in them and also the management of the UCMAS body for making an impact in their lives.
