Equatorial Guinea court jails Baltasar Engonga

A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced former senior government official Baltasar Ebang Engonga to eight years in prison for embezzlement.

Engonga gained public notoriety after explicit videos featuring him and several women, some of whom were reportedly married to other officials, were leaked online.

According to Supreme Court press director Hilario Mitogo, the Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of misusing funds allocated for official travel, diverting them for personal purposes.

In addition to the prison sentence, he was ordered to pay a $220,000 fine.

Engonga, who once led the national financial investigation agency, was tried alongside five other senior officials accused of embezzling substantial amounts of public money.

His arrest in November followed the online circulation of the sextapes, which emerged while he was already under investigation for financial misconduct.
