GHANA BAR ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE: EFUA GHARTEY ELECTED FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT OF GBA

Mrs. Efua Ghartey has made history by becoming the first female president of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).
The election took place at the GBA congress in Kumasi on Wednesday, September 11, marking a significant milestone in the association’s history. She polled 1,278 votes to beat her closest contender, Agbesi Dzakpasu, who polled 1060.
Mrs. Ghartey’s election is being hailed as a transformative moment for the GBA, as it ushers in new leadership that is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the legal profession in Ghana.
The newly elected GBA President, Mrs. Efua Ghartey, pledged to unite the professional body following her historic election as the first woman to lead the association.
In her victory speech on Wednesday, she described her election as “something new and novel.”
She promised that under her leadership, the GBA would make progress, with a focus on service, unity, and accountability.
Mrs. Ghartey stressed that she will superintend an end to divisions and factions within the GBA, stating that the GBA has spoken, and from this day forward, it is a united bar in service.

In a statement, the outgoing GBA President, Yaw Boafo, said that the GBA feels “proud to have Efua Ghartey as its first female President” and looks forward to working with her to achieve the set goals and objectives.
The outgoing GBA President also bemoans partisan alignments and monetary inducements in their election.

The Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, who was at the annual conference, refuted claims that the association has been politicized. He said the association is made up of people from different political parties and only looks at competence, leadership skills, and assertiveness, among others

Mrs Ghartey, a seasoned lawyer of over 30 years’ standing at the bar with an extensive track record of service to the GBA, was running for national president for the third time.
Efua Ghartey, who was the immediate past chair of the Greater Accra branch of the GBA, has over 20 years of experience at the bar.
