GHANA’S POSITION ON THE MID-EAST CRISIS: GHANA SEEKS A 2-STATE SOLUTION FOR PEACE BETWEEN ISRAEL AND GAZA – FOREIGN MINISTER

Ghana has reiterated its stated position of a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, which has raged on for over 5 decades.
This sentiment was echoed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, in a brief interview in Accra on Monday.
The United Nations this week commenced a debate on the sovereignty of the State of Palestine during a United Nations General Assembly session, where the crisis-strewn state is making its case for full statehood and nationhood.
The Foreign Minister called on Israel and Palestine, as well as the countries in the region, to commit to a negotiated, just, and peaceful resolution of the protracted conflict to pacify the region and assure all countries of an equal measure of security, freedom, opportunity, and dignity.
The Minister insisted that even though Ghana is sympathetic to the cause of the Palestinians, it is not taking sides and called on the warring factions to embrace negotiations for a ceasefire and a diplomatic end to the conflict.

Madam Shirley Botchwey also condemned the October 7 attacks on Israel and called for the immediate release of all remaining hostages in Palestinian captivity.
She renewed Ghana’s commitment to support efforts towards lasting peace in the Middle East region and underscored the need for cooperation and unified action by all stakeholders.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. In 1947, the United Nations adopted Resolution 181, known as the Partition Plan, which sought to divide the British Mandate of Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. On May 14, 1948, the State of Israel was created, sparking the first Arab-Israeli War. The war ended in 1949 with Israel’s victory, but 750,000 Palestinians were displaced, and the territory was divided into 3 parts: the State of Israel, the West Bank (of the Jordan River), and the Gaza Strip.
