President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says the government is considering the implications a lockdown would have on the ordinary people of Ghana.
Addressing the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) at the Jubilee House, Thursday [March 26, 2020], President Akufo-Addo said a responsible government is required to look at all the implications before decisions are made.
The President’s comments comes after calls for a lockdown of the country flooded social media this week, with many proposing it as a solution to curb the spread of the Coronavirus in the country.
President Akufo-Addo also noted that he feels vindicated by the decision to mandatorily quarantine travellers who flew into the country when he issued a directive to shutdown Ghana’s borders.
According to him, the overwhelming number of coronavirus cases that Ghana has recorded are all imported into the country by people who are returning from abroad.
Since Ghana recorded 132 Covid-19 cases with deaths, there has been pressure on government to announce a lockdown with immediate effect.
The Ghana Medical Association and the Trade Union Congress say such a directive will help contain the spread of the virus and prevent fear and panic.
Globally, over 500,000 persons have tested positive for the coronavirus, with over 20,000 deaths and about 118,000 recoveries.
The most ravaged countries in the world include China, the US, Italy, and Spain, with South Africa topping the African sick list.
