The vice-presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has revealed plans to establish local industries for the production of dialysis consumables and reagents.
This initiative, aimed at reducing the cost of kidney disease treatment in Ghana, is part of the NPP’s broader strategy to enhance healthcare delivery.
He said the NPP plans to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to establish world-class facilities for manufacturing dialysis consumables.
This strategy is expected to boost the local economy while addressing the high cost of renal treatments.
This announcement follows the government’s rollout of free dialysis treatment for renal patients, which commenced on December 1, 2024.
Speaking during a visit to the Renal Department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated that the government is already engaging companies that manufacture dialysis-related products to explore potential partnerships.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted the NPP government’s track record in healthcare, citing the ongoing construction of 111 hospitals under the Agenda 111 initiative as evidence of their dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure nationwide.
In a related development, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh visited nursing trainees at the Komfo Anokye Nurse Training College in Kumasi.
With Saturday’s elections looming, Dr. Prempeh used the occasion to rally support among nursing students, promising swift and increased allowances to make their stay on campuses more comfortable.
He said under the previous government, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), nursing trainee allowances were cancelled and replaced with student loans for two years, a government decision he criticised but said the NPP has reinstated them despite some delays in payment.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh encouraged the nursing trainees to vote wisely, as their decision would shape their future and that of their children. Dr. Opoku Prempeh stressed that a vote for the NPP would ensure expanded medical services and improved access for all.
