Government tasks Police to investigate Ejura deaths and rioting

The government has asked the Police Administration to fast-track investigation into the death of Ibrahim Mohammed, alias Kaka, and subsequent rioting at Ejura in the Ashanti Region after his burial on Tuesday, June 29, leading to two more deaths.Addressing the media in Accra on Wednesday on the matter, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah described the death of Mr Mohammed as unfortunate and condemnable, and urged the Police to work assiduously towards bringing finality to all other similar murders, in order to regain public confidence in them.

According to him, the continuous delay in identifying persons behind such unfortunate incidents often bred suspicion, leading to what was witnessed in Ejura.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah said government viewed the Ejura rioting seriously and would ensure that persons found culpable after investigations were dealt with according to law.

The government spokesperson condemned the death of Kaka and two others and injuries to four persons during a protest.

‘Government wishes to commiserate with the families of the victims and their loved ones and urge the security agencies to be quick and clinical in getting to the bottom of this and other unresolved crimes,” Mr Oppong Nkrumah added.

The Minister observed that while it was understandable that police investigations sometimes took a while, it did not instill confidence in the public if such acts went unresolved and unpunished.

“So the police needs to get to the bottom of this. Also a credible investigations needs to be conducted into the crowd rioting and crowd controlling incident of 29th June,” he stated.

The Minister said this was necessary because it would bring clarity to the sequence of events and ensure that any person who acted inappropriately was punished.

He also commended family members and youth groups who had asked opportunistic individuals and groups who want to take advantage of the unfortunate incident for their parochial interest to back off and allow the authorities to perform their duties.
