“Konadu was far more than a First Lady; she was a pioneering leader and a trailblazer” – President Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has hailed the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings as a “pioneering leader” whose bold influence helped reshape Ghana’s political and social landscape, particularly redefining the role of the First Lady.

Delivering a tribute read on his behalf at Konadu’s state funeral, President John Dramani Mahama said the nation was mourning “a truly remarkable woman” whose impact would be felt for generations.

“She was a towering figure in our national life—her courage, influence, and service to Ghana will echo far into the future,” he noted.

Mahama stressed that Nana Konadu was far more than a former First Lady. “She was a pioneering leader, a steadfast advocate for women’s empowerment, a trailblazer in our political history, and a devoted patriot,” he said.

He added that her life was defined by remarkable courage and conviction. “Her story is one of boldness—boldness to speak out, to challenge norms, to lead, and to stand firmly for what she believed was right for Ghana.”

He noted that Nana Konadu fundamentally changed the public’s expectations of the First Lady’s role. “As First Lady, she reshaped the position and turned it into a driving force for national development,” he said.

At the heart of this transformation was her leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement. President Mahama recalled how she “opened doors of opportunity for women and girls, particularly in rural communities where the need was greatest,” championing literacy, maternal health, early childhood education, and economic empowerment long before these issues gained national attention.

“Her efforts touched countless families and set the foundation for many of the gender-focused policies and social programmes that Ghana enjoys today,” he added.

Beyond her political engagements, he described Nana Konadu as assertive, principled, and steadfast, yet also warm, witty, and deeply committed to her family. “Behind her strong public presence was a warm, lively, humorous woman… a mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and mentor,” he said.

Even in challenging public moments, she remained poised and dignified. “She lived a life defined by service, courage, and unwavering conviction… always driven by her commitment to Ghana’s unity, progress, and stability,” he said.

Mr. Mahama reflected on her deep faith in the potential of women and the youth. “She believed wholeheartedly in the transformative power of women and in the promise of young people, dedicating her voice and influence to lifting them up,” he noted.

He described her passing as an immense loss to both her family and the nation. “It signifies the end of a significant chapter in Ghana’s political and social journey, even as her example continues to inspire future generations.”

“As we bid farewell to Nana Konadu, we honour a life lived with purpose—one of leadership, advocacy, service, and steadfast dedication… May her beautiful soul rest in perfect peace, and may her legacy continue to guide us toward a more just, inclusive, and equitable Ghana. Ghana will remember you.”
