Lionel Messi was delighted to add ‘one more’ Copa America trophy to his collection after Argentina beat Colombia in extra time to win the tournament for a record 16th time.
The final, which was delayed by 80 minutes because of crowd trouble outside the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, appeared to be heading to penalties before Lautaro Martinez popped up with the only goal in the second-half of extra time.
Argentina captain Messi was forced off with an ankle injury on 66 minutes and broke down in tears as he left the pitch and sat on the bench.
But Messi’s agony soon turned to joy as Argentina scored late to down Colombia and win their third trophy in three years.
The morning after Argentina’s triumph, Messi posted a picture on Instagram of him holding the trophy accompanied with the caption: ‘One more.’
Messi went the first 15 years of his international career without winning any silverware but has lifted two Copa America trophies and the World Cup since 2021.
For Colombia, a narrow and painful defeat to Argentina means they remain without a Copa America triumph since 2001.
Speaking after Argentina’s Copa America victory, Lionel Scaloni said: ‘I’m very happy because the people are happy, they have a moment of happiness and that’s what the players play for.
‘That’s what those of us who manage the national team are here for, for the people to identify with the team.
‘This team never ceases to surprise, they overcame the difficulties of a very difficult match, with a very complicated opponent and without a good first half.
‘In the second half I think we improved and deserved to win and then always in extra time, in the long run the team always finds something extra, so it’s gratifying to see them play and I’m eternally grateful for the way they give their all.’
As well as winning multiple trophies with Argentina, Messi – regarded as one of the best players of all time – won ten La Liga titles with Barcelona and four Champions Leagues.
