Mahama Orders Investigation Into Fatal Obuasi Clash

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into the violent clash between illegal miners and military personnel at the AngloGold Ashanti Mines in Obuasi on January 18, 2025. The incident led to the tragic deaths of at least eight illegal miners. The miners, who were reportedly armed with various weapons, attempted to breach the security fence at the mine. Upon being confronted by soldiers, they opened fire, prompting the military to return fire in self-defense. This resulted in fatalities, with one miner seriously injured and others fleeing the scene.

President Mahama expressed deep regret over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the victims’ families. He emphasized that anyone found to have acted unlawfully during the confrontation would be held accountable. The government has directed AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical expenses for the injured and assist with burial arrangements for the deceased. Furthermore, security forces have been tasked with restoring peace in the area and implementing measures to prevent further violence.

The Department of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed the death toll of seven illegal miners and stated that the miners were carrying weapons such as rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, and gas cylinders when the violence erupted.
