Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, Passes Away at 86; Traditional Council Notifies Asantehene

In accordance with Asante custom, the Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo Dynasty have formally notified the Asantehene of the passing of Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

The solemn announcement at the Manhyia Palace, led by Mamponghemaa Nana Agyakoma Difie II, marks the end of an era for one of Ghana’s most revered traditional leaders.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who until his passing served as Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, was the distinguished occupant of the Silver Stool—a role of profound traditional importance within the Asante Kingdom.

His position placed him as the second-in-command within the Ashanti traditional hierarchy, frequently representing the Asantehene in important customary affairs.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, born on 31 December 1939, passed away at the age of 86 after a distinguished 26-year reign.

Before ascending to the throne, he was known as Oswald Gyimah-Kessie—a lawyer and economist by training—who notably served as the Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Renowned for his diplomacy and steadfast commitment, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II leaves behind a legacy marked by decades of devoted service to his people and to Ghana’s broader chieftaincy institution.

The news of his passing was formally conveyed to the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace, in keeping with the deep-rooted customs and reverence traditionally accorded to royals within the Asante Kingdom.

His final public appearance was during the most recent Akwasidae held in Mampong, where he openly condemned certain NDC supporters for inciting tribal divisions amid their protest against the nomination of a Municipal Chief Executive for the Mampong Municipal Assembly.

Details regarding his funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
