Minister Of Health Briefs House On Outbreaks Of Cholera, Meningitis, HMVP In Ghana

The Minister of Health, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Tuesday briefed Parliament on the ongoing outbreaks of cholera and meningitis in the country, saying Ghana has so far recorded 6,145 cases.

This follows an appeal by the Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, requesting the Minister to update the House on measures being taken by the government to contain the spread of the diseases.

Briefing parliament on the country’s current health emergencies, Akandoh said the outbreak, which began in the Greater Accra Region in October 2024, has since spread to four additional regions.

Regarding meningitis, Mr Akandoh noted that as of Sunday, February 16, the country had recorded over 129 cases and unfortunately, 16 deaths, while 29 people were currently on admission.

In addition, the sector minister reported a single case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in the country but assured that the risk of HMPV in Ghana remained low.

The Minister emphasised that the government was taking a multisectoral approach to control the outbreaks, including strengthening surveillance, providing timely treatment, raising public awareness, and collaborating with local and international partners.

Mr Akandoh, also a National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Juaboso, appealed to health workers, local authorities, and the media to support the ongoing response to the outbreaks.
