Minority Caucus donates GH¢200,000 to support Kantamanto Market fire victims

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, on Tuesday donated GH¢200,000 to support traders affected by the devastating fire at the Kantamanto Market in Accra on January 2, 2025.

This follows a visit to Kumasi earlier in the week to express their sympathies for the Adum fire victims, which devastated the Blue Light Market precincts, resulting in losses amounting to millions of Ghana cedis.

During a visit to the Katamanto Market, Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed empathy for the traders who lost goods and property in the fire.

He described the donation as a “modest contribution” from the Caucus, saying it aimed to provide some relief to the affected traders as they worked to rebuild their businesses.

The Minority Leader also called on companies that had provided loans to the traders to consider reducing interest rates, providing some financial relief.

The impact of the fire on the Kantamanto trading community has been severe, with many still counting their losses and struggling to regain their footing.

The Minority in Parliament’s donation, in addition to others, including those of Hon Ken Agyapong, Dr Mahmoud Bawumia, and the national executives of the NPP, among others, is expected to bring a measure of hope to those still reeling from the destruction.

Still at the Kantamanto Market, Afenyo-Markin used the occasion to appeal to NPP members to stop airing internal grievances through the media. He called for unity and discipline as the party reorganises and prepares for the 2028 general elections.

Afenyo-Markin, who addressed party sympathisers, stressed the need for internal cohesion and respectful engagement among party members, and called on party faithful to remain united and avoid public confrontations.
