The Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, following a summons by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, for alleged involvement in illegal mining and alleged financial irregularities involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIMBANK).
Earlier on Thursday, minority lawmakers, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader, held a sit-down protest at the EOCO premises in Accra, demanding fair treatment for Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, after boycotting parliamentary proceedings.
The NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) marched from Parliament House, taking over portions of the street directly in front of EOCO’s office, to express solidarity with the party’s Ashanti Regional chairman.
Their actions follow a rallying call on Wednesday by NPP presidential hopeful Hon Ken Ohene Agyapong for the minority caucus and other NPP executives to stand in solidarity with the embattled Chairman Wontumi.
The protest, marked by chants of patriotic songs and calls for justice, brought traffic to a standstill and drew a heavy police presence as security personnel attempted to maintain order.
Effutu MP Afenyo-Markin, on behalf of the Minority MPs, decried what he described as political persecution and the weaponisation of state institutions against political opponents.
He criticised the GH¢50 million bail conditions as “unreasonable and outrageous.”
Other MPs, NPP executives and sympathisers expressed their frustrations at the continued detention of the NPP Ashanti Regional chairman.
So far, the appeals for a reasonable bail bond have fallen on deaf ears.
