The Parliament of Ghana has approved a budget allocation of GH₵65,899,456 for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2025. However, this approval has sparked concerns among Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding the absence of funds specifically for the maintenance of sports infrastructure in the country.
Kofi Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, stated that the Accra Sports Stadium is set to undergo much-needed renovations following Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad. Despite this, MPs such as Dominic Nitiwul and Frank Annoh-Dompreh expressed worries over the lack of dedicated funding for maintaining sports infrastructure.
Dominic Nitiwul, the MP for Bimbilla, stressed the importance of increasing the Ministry’s funding. He remarked, “We cannot leave it to the discretion of the Finance Minister or the President to decide on these matters.” Nitiwul suggested that the leadership find ways to reallocate funds to support the Ministry’s capital expenditures, highlighting that the Ministry is vital for the growth and development of sports in Ghana.
Similarly, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, called for a separate budget line dedicated to the maintenance of sports facilities. He pointed out the substantial investments made in these infrastructures and emphasized the need for sustainable upkeep.
The approved budget, while substantial, has raised questions about the government’s commitment to long-term sports development. Although GH₵65.9 million is a significant allocation, the lack of specific funding for infrastructure maintenance raises concerns about the sustainability of sports development in the country.
