The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has assured officers, men, and women of the country’s security agencies that the government is committed to improving their living conditions and standards through its comprehensive policy of providing modern equipment, advanced training, state-of-the-art residential facilities, and better working conditions for them.
Addressing police officers and other attendees at a ceremony held at the forecourt of the 320 new housing units constructed for the Police Service at Tesano, a suburb in Accra, on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, President Akufo-Addo noted that by “providing these modern, well-equipped housing facilities” and other tools and equipment to the police, his administration aims “to improve the quality of life of officers, men, and women of the Police Service and help create a conducive environment that motivates them and enhances their operational readiness.”
“This project will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the police community, serving as a model for other security services and illustrating our dedication to delivering high-quality housing solutions that meet current standards of comfort, sustainability, and safety.
The president noted that the project is part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance the capacity of security officers and create a robust security system as his government lays the foundation for a safer and more secure Ghana.
“The benefits of this ambitious project extend beyond providing shelter; it also improves the quality of life for our Police officers and their families, creating a sense of security and stability that I am confident will be reciprocated in their wholehearted enthusiasm for duty. “The security housing project is part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance the capacity of our security agencies. It goes hand in hand with our efforts to provide modern equipment, advanced training, and better working conditions for our Police force. “We believe that our holistic approach is necessary to create a robust and effective security system by addressing the various needs of our security personnel, we are laying a solid foundation for a safer and more secure Ghana.”
President Akufo-Addo extended his congratulations to Commissioner of Police (COP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, on his promotion to the position of Deputy Inspector General of Police (D-IGP) in charge of Operations and expressed confidence in Deputy IGP Yohuno’s continued commitment to fostering an effective and efficient police service.
“I like to use the platform to congratulate that long-serving, respected law enforcement officer, Commissioner of Police (COP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, on his elevation to the office of Deputy Inspector General of Police with responsibility for operations.” “I have no doubt that, as in the past, deputy IGP Yohuno will be a good team player and contribute his full cottar to the flourishing of an effective, efficient police service.”
The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said in his address that the provision of decent housing to the country’s security agencies remains a critical agenda of the Akufo-Addo government, and his ministry will continue to champion those efforts.
He pointed out that over the lifespan of the Akufo-Addo government, it has provided a total of one thousand (1,000) housing units for the country’s security agencies.
“It brings to a total of 1,000 homes for the security services alone since 2017 and we are grateful to you, sir (President Akufo-Addo) for this intervention. These 1,000 homes for the security services alone are exclusive of the 1,700 affordable homes that the TDC has constructed in Kpong, currently being used by health workers, doctors, nurses, and other public servants.” “They are also exclusive of the 405 homes owned by the National Home Owners Fund in community 22. These homes are also exclusive of the 822 homes that the State Housing Company has put up in various locations since 2017. They are also exclusive of the nearly 600 homes for civil servants currently under redevelopment through our Bangalow redevelopment here in Accra, led by the Ministry of Works and Housing.”
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare for his part, eulogised President Akufo-Addo for his legacy in the Ghana Police Service.
IGP highlighted several achievements, including the creation of an emergency medical fund for police officers, the provision of 4,000 motorbikes to boost visibility across the country, the establishment of over 80 Formed Police Units (FPUs) nationwide, improvements in professionalism among officers, and the provision of decent accommodations at Kwabenya and Tesano.
