Policy document on Plastic Waste Management to be presented soon to Parliament – Prof Frimpong Boateng

The Minister of Environment ,Science ,Technology and Innovation,Prof Frimpong Boateng has said his Ministry will soon present a policy and implementation plan on plastic management to Parliament for consideration.

He made the comment in Parliament today after a statement made by Hon Clement Apaak MP for Builsa South on Plastic Waste Management in Ghana .

Prof Frimpong Boateng said the Ministry will also present to Parliament for consideration, a document for the establishment of a Resource Recovery Secretariat which will monitor the plastic situation in the country .

He said the Ministry or government is not in favour of a complete ban on plastic use in the country as that will not be in the interest of the country since plastics are used in all areas of the economy such as agriculture , medicine and sale of items (commerce ) .

According to the Minister , plastic items that could be ban in the country include plastic bags , straw, plastic cutlery and chewing gums .

Making the statement on Plastic Waste Management in Ghana , Hon Dr Clement Apaak said plastic is a very valuable material with enormous benefits .

However , he said the use of plastics is associated with many challenges when not properly managed.Dr Apaak said immediate action is therefore needed to address plastic waste and plastic pollution to safeguard the environment .
