President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated his support for the Attorney General to prosecute all persons found to be engaging in illegal mining in the country.
The President said he is committed to ensuring that, Aisha Huang, is prosecuted by the Attorney-General.
Speaking at the annual conference of the Ghana Bar Association in Ho yesterday, The President assured Ghanaians that the Attorney General has his full support for the intended prosecution of the Aisha Huang and her accomplices, who continue to flout the laws of Ghana with their illegal mining activities.
President Akufo-Addo further indicated that his government is not against licensed and legal small-scale mining.
During the launching of the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme in October 2021, the President said, his Government is in full support of responsible small-scale mining activities, as they provide an avenue for Ghanaians to participate in the mining industry, and contribute substantially to our gold exports. President Nana Addo continued that Small-scale mining should be encouraged with all the necessary laws.
He, however, added that what the country cannot do, and will not allow happening, is to permit mining activities that threaten the environment which sustains our lives and the livelihoods of generations unborn.
The President further said every Ghanaian owes it a duty to preserve the environment, even as we reap the benefits of our natural resources and that Small scale mining can, and must, only be done responsibly.
