President John Dramani Mahama has signed into law a series of bills that will abolish the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), the Betting Tax, and the Emissions Levy.
This move fulfills a significant campaign promise made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to alleviate the financial burden on Ghanaians. The E-Levy, which was introduced in 2022, faced significant opposition due to its impact on mobile money transactions, a widely used method of payment in Ghana. The Betting Tax, imposed on the gambling sector, and the Emissions Levy, designed to address environmental concerns, were also met with criticism from various quarters.
With the signing of these bills, President Mahama aims to ease the economic strain on individuals and businesses, addressing public concerns about the negative effects of these taxes. While the decision has been welcomed by many, it also raises questions about how the government will compensate for the loss of revenue generated by these levies and ensure continued progress on the country’s development agenda.
