Former NDC National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has condemned viral videos of farmers cutting down cocoa trees, calling the acts politically motivated and urging security agencies to arrest those involved.
Speaking on Asempa FM, he stressed that cocoa trees are vital economic assets and can only be removed with official approval. He highlighted government support for cocoa farming through COCOBOD’s provision of free spraying equipment and agrochemicals.
Ofosu Ampofo called on communities to report offenders and revealed that a new law is being drafted to ban unauthorized destruction of cocoa trees, requiring replanting if trees are cut. He also urged further research into the reasons behind such actions, warning that selling land for illegal mining often harms farmers in the long run.
