The toll workers union on Tuesday 5th day of July 2022, expressed their displeasure over poor living conditions since the cessation of road tolls.
Presenting the petition to parliament, the secretary of the union Mr. Edward Duncan, stated that they are living in hunger for 8 months after the cancellation of road tolls and demanded payment of salary arrears. He also called for reinstating toll collection by the government.
He stated that the perception by authorities indicating that road toll collections generate traffic is untrue and he noted that there’s massive traffic across the country since its cancellation.
The deputy majority whip and Mp for Ayawaso West Wugon, Lydia Seryram Alhassan, who received the petition on behalf of parliament stated that parliament will put proper measures in place to make sure the concerns raised are addressed.
The Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Banda Ibrahim Ahmed stated that the minority was not in support of the cancellation of the roads tolls.He stated that persons with disability should be consulted before the cancellation. And called on finance minister Ken. Ofori-Atta to do the needful when coming with the Mid-Year budget review.
