UPSA, KNUST Pledge To Promote Ga-Dangme Heritage Through Committed Actions

Two of Ghana’s leading universities, the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), have pledged to promote the Ga-Dangme heritage to ensure the language is preserved.

The 2 institutions made these commitments at separate events at the Ga Traditional Council at the Ga Mantse palace over the weekend.

The first to commit was UPSA when its management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, paid a courtesy call on King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse.

The visit highlighted a shared vision to promote Ga-Dangme heritage through education.

According to Professor Mawutor, the new UPSA leadership aims to integrate the Ga-Dangme language and heritage into its academic programs and empower students to teach in neighbouring schools within the community, helping to preserve and promote the language. He added that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to address the shortage of Ga-Dangme teachers in the region.

To show the commitment of the university, the UPSA Vice-Chancellor used the occasion to announce a scholarship program that will significantly help in the tutelage of the Ga-Dangme language in various communities.

Responding on behalf of King Tackie Teiko Tsuru, the spokesperson for the Ga Traditional Council expressed gratitude for the scholarships and was full of praise to the university for showing the way. He also pledged to the Ga Traditional Council’s support for the school in their quest to help promote and preserve the Ga-Dangme culture.

In a later development, a delegation from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Business School paid a courtesy call on King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse, to strengthen ties and explore impactful collaborations.

During the engagement, Dr. Samuel Yaw Akomea, Head of the Centre for Business Development, KNUST, proposed specialized training initiatives aimed at empowering the Ga community. The delegation also extended a special invitation to the Ga Mantse to grace the school’s 20th Anniversary Celebration.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II expressed his support for the school’s initiatives, emphasizing the crucial role of education and professional training in fostering socio-economic development
