‘The line where the sky meets the water is calling out “Moana” again.

On Wednesday, Disney announced a sequel to the successful 2016 animated feature, including a release date. The film is a departure from the initial concept to have “Moana 2” play out as a television series.

“Moana” was a huge hit for Disney, grossing more than $680 million and becoming the most-streamed film of 2023, according to Nielsen data.

The upcoming sequel to the “epic animated musical ‘Moana 2’ takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers,” according to a press release from Disney.

The blurb went on to say: “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

The sequel, directed by Dave Derrick Jr., will include songs from Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.

“Moana 2” reaches theaters on November 27, 2024.
